World Autism Awareness Day

Today is World Autism Awareness Day. I pray that someday we won’t need a “day” to accept and understand every single wonderful individual, exactly as God made them. Each and every one of my children are a gift, and they have all taught me a million times over any of the things that I have taught them. (ETA, they all have given my permission to share their names & photographs)
The text on the photo reads:

“April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. Three of my six children are on the autism spectrum. It’s called autism spectrum disorder because there are huge differences (yet many similarities) among those people on the autism spectrum. My children currently range from non-verbal to intellectually gifted, yet all diagnosed with ASD. The current rate of ASD is 1 in 68 so I’m sure you know someone who is affected by it. Although each of my ASD children have unique challenges that I wish I could remove from them (as no parent wants to see their child struggle), they also each have amazing, unique gifts BECAUSE of their ASD. I ask that you educate yourself further about ASD, consider a donation to one of the many different ASD charities, or simply remind yourself & those around you that we are ALL unique individuals, loved & created by God, who deserve as much respect and dignity as everyone else does. I’m humbled and blessed that God chose me to be the mother of these amazing children (and ALL my unique children). Please keep compassion in mind when you are out in the world and experience someone “different” than you. You never know what challenges they might face.”

Scrapbooking is for EVERYONE!

I often think there is a stereotypical image of who a “scrapbooker” is.

I know I’ve often heard that it’s a “Mom Hobby”. When speaking to people about scrapbooking and memory keeping some common excuses I hear as to why they can’t scrapbook are things like “Oh, I don’t have any kids.” “I’m single, who would care about my albums?”. “I’m not a crafty person”.

I believe memory keeping is important and that there so many different ways to do it that I can help you find a method that works for YOU. For your lifestyle, for the types of photographs you have and that you take, for the types of stories important to you.

I came across this story about a scrapbooking dreadlock dad and just had to share it with you.

Ideas using punches

Today I thought I’d share a few cards featuring pieces made with punches. It’s pretty amazing to me the designs that can be made from combining a few pieces of punched out paper.

How cute is that lion?! Look closely and you’ll see that his face is simply a scallop circle punch for the mane, and various sizes of circles make up the rest of him.

Again, some adorable designs- the strawberries are heart & flower punch pieces layered together.

If you’re more of a scrapbooker than a card maker, these ideas easily work for page embellishments too.

When you’re working with craft punches, it’s important to use a high quality punch. I’ve tried cheaper brands in the past and was very disappointed at the ragged edges I’d get, or how difficult it was to operate the punch. The line of Stampin’ Up! punches are the highest quality. I have a client with arthritis in her hands who has said SU punches are the only ones she can use. Our punches allow you to punch precisely and crisply exactly where you want on your paper, something extremely important when working with patterned papers.

The large word greetings featured on these cards are from the Watercolor Words stamp set in the new catalog.

I’ll be placing an order on September 29th, so please contact me if you’d like to purchase anything or with any questions or comments. Happy scrapin’!

Blendabilites Markers Update

I’m sad to let you know that Stampin’ Up! has made the difficult decision to discontinue the line of Blendabilites alcohol markers.

In short, the welding process of attaching the marker tip to the barrel of the marker can result in microscopic holes in the tip of the marker. This can lead to accelerated evaporation of the alcohol in the ink, resulting in a dried up, unusable marker.

There is a detailed explanation and Q&A about this problem posted here.

Please note that this defect does NOT affect all the markers that are out there. It’s estimated that approximately 30-40% of the markers were affected by the defect. My markers are thankfully fine, and I will continue to use them for personal use. If you have purchased any Blendabilites, or earned some as a free Sale-A-Bration item, I encourage you to test your markers to see if they are working. If they are unusable, or you are uncomfortable keeping them, please contact me by June 15, 2015, and I will send them back to the company for you and you will be offered a refund or exchange for a different product. Shipping and sales tax will also be refunded for any returned defective markers.

You can see the video the company produced with more information, as well as questions and answers by clicking here. The video also shares ideas for other options for your coloring needs using other products we offer.

The success of the Blendabilites line has surely let Stampin’ Up! know that alcohol based markers, and all the crafting possibilities that they allow, are a high demand product and they are continuing to work on finding a new manufacturer or method of producing these markers that will result in a high quality, stable product line. Stampin’ Up! is known for and stands by their commitment to the highest quality products, so they could not in good conscience continue to offer a product line that did not meet those high standards.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions. I know this is disappointing and frustrating news, but I for one am very glad that the company has acknowledged this issue, and is not going to continue to sell problematic products. Refer to the Q & A posted above, and stay tuned for updates, I will post them as I hear them from the company. Thanks for your time, and your support of my business and Stampin’ Up!.
